How does it work?
There is a difference between video and video. The datarate of uncompressed video is 34 Mbyte/s. A dvd player can read about 1.2 Mbyte/s. It is therefore necessary to compress the video. In all forms of video compression it is imperative that the material is without too much noise. Most modern compression techniques are based on looking att differences between consecutive pictures and store the differences. Is there a lot of noise in the picture there will be a lot of differences and the compression will not be as effective resulting in a poor image. Several techniques are used in normal compression if which two are readily explainable.
Spatial compression
I.e. compression within frames
The human eys is sensitive to contours and details. This is the reason why compression algorithms work to ceep them but disregards info in large even colorfields. Since niose is the same as fine detail in the picture, a lot of data is used to preserve the noise thus using up too much. This resulting in too litte data for the image and a blocky picture.
Temporal compression
I.e. compression between frames.
Instead if storing information about every pixel in the image the algorithms try to define fields (areas) in the picture that di not change between them. If do not change but move, only the information of movement is stored. Examle: hockeypuck sliding on ice. the whole image is white exept a small area with the puck. Only the movement of the area with the puck (move left) and what replaces the area where the puck just left (fill with white) is stored. With noise in this video everything seems to move an no area stays the same. Thus no information can be saved and there will no be enought data to reproduce the image with satisfying result.
