This compression type was developed for Video-CD and has superiour compatibility. All computers can playback MPEG-1 without having anything special installed PCs and Macs
MPEG-1 equals VHS in quality but with less noise and is well suited for fullscreenmode. It is a true 25 fps PAL (29.97 fps NTSC) format.
The sound is of CD quality. MPEG-1 files are rather big so they are not the best choice for websites.

This compression type yealds files of very high quality. Its main use is Broadcast distribution, various tape formats and DVDs
MPEG-2 files can also be used for high quality multimedia presentations and PowerPoint.
Virtually all "DigitalTelevision" distribution (cabel, satellite etc) is using MPEG-2 as compression format today.
